About Chris Wheeler
Christopher Wheeler became the headmaster of Tower Hill School in Wilmington, Delaware in 2004. He began his independent school career in 1984 at St. Paul’s School, Garden City, New York, as a music teacher, coach and dorm advisor.
“The generosity and openness of the heads of school in Wheeler’s book is notable. Rarely are people willing to share so much personal information particularly knowing that there is a reasonable chance that their friends, enemies, and colleagues might read this book. In the close-knit world of independent schools this kind of transparency is rare.”
In 1990 he moved to Lake Forest Academy where he served for 14 years in various administrative roles including dean of students, admission director and assistant head of school. He is a graduate of Westtown School in Westtown, Pennsylvania. He earned a BM degree in music composition at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and earned MA and Ph.D degrees in music composition from SUNY Stony Brook. His passion is flying – he is an instrument rated private pilot and spends as much time in the air piloting his single engine airplane as possible. His proudest accomplishment is his son, now grown and charging down the path to great and interesting things.
